I've been handling instrumentation procurement for industrial maintenance for about seven years now. And here's the most valuable thing I've learned: The vendor who says 'that's not our strength' is worth ten vendors who say 'we can do everything.'
I know that sounds backwards. When you're under pressure to consolidate suppliers and simplify procurement, a one-stop shop feels like the answer. But I'm going to walk you through why that thinking cost me real money — and why I now treat boundary-setting as a trust signal, not a red flag.

What I didn't realize until much later: they were subcontracting the temperature sensors to a third party that nobody had vetted. The pressure gauges arrived fine. The transmitters were mediocre but workable. The temperature sensors — I want to say about 18 of them — had a tolerance drift issue that didn't show up until the third calibration cycle.
We had to pull them all, send them back, and re-source from a specialist. That error cost $2,400 in redo plus a five-day production delay. The worst part wasn't the money. It was explaining to my plant manager why I'd trusted a generalist with a specialist job.
Everything I'd read about vendor consolidation said fewer suppliers meant fewer headaches. In practice, for precision instrumentation, the opposite was true.

Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and delivery lead times. Those matter, sure. But they completely miss two factors that determine whether your instrumentation actually works in the field: documentation quality and application support depth.
Here's a concrete example. After the temperature sensor disaster, I started requesting full technical documentation packages before placing orders — datasheets, wiring diagrams, calibration certificates, and installation guides. The difference was stark.
Specialist suppliers like WIKA, for instance, provide detailed catalogs with dimensional drawings, wiring schematics, and material compatibility tables that let our engineers verify fitment before the product ships. The generalist supplier I'd used before? Their 'catalog' was a two-page PDF with product photos and a phone number.
That documentation gap isn't just about convenience. It's about whether your team can commission the instrument correctly on day one — or whether you'll spend three weeks emailing back and forth trying to figure out if a pressure transmitter needs a 24V or 12V supply.
According to ASME B40.100, pressure gauges carry accuracy grades (Grade 2A, Grade 1A, etc.) that define allowable error margins. If your vendor can't tell you which grade they're supplying and why it matters for your application, that's a problem. That's not a specification issue — it's a competence issue.
Evidence #3: Why 'Doing Everything' Often Means 'Doing Nothing Well'
People think a vendor who offers more products must have more expertise. Actually, vendors who specialize can charge more and deliver more — because they've invested in calibration labs, application engineers, and documentation teams that generalists can't justify.
I first noticed this pattern when comparing pressure measurement options. We needed a differential pressure indicator for a filter monitoring application. The generalist supplier quoted us a unit that was $40 cheaper. The specialist supplier — I believe it was a WIKA differential pressure gauge — cost more upfront but came with a calibration certificate traceable to NIST standards, plus a technical support line where I could actually talk to an engineer who understood our filter setup.
The $40 savings would have been consumed in the first phone call with the generalist's 'support' line.
There's also a subtler issue. When a vendor says they do everything, they're often relying on distributors or third parties for the parts they don't actually manufacture. That means quality control ends at their loading dock — not at the factory floor. For something like a pressure sensor that's monitoring a critical process, 'we hope it's fine' isn't a quality strategy.
What About the Concern That Specialists Are Harder to Work With?
I've heard this one. The idea is that using multiple specialist suppliers creates more POs, more invoices, more coordination headaches. And yes, there's some truth to that administrative overhead.
But here's the counterargument: one wrong shipment from a generalist costs more in time and rework than a dozen correct shipments from specialists. I've tracked this. We've caught 31 potential errors in the past 18 months using our pre-check list — errors that would have slipped through if we'd been dealing with vendors who didn't have the technical depth to advise us properly.
Also, a good specialist will tell you when something isn't their strength. The Reason I Still Check Their Catalogs
I want to be clear: I'm not saying specialists are perfect. I still verify everything. I still check that the pressure transmitter I'm ordering has the right process connection, the right accuracy class, and a current calibration certificate. If I remember correctly, we had one shipment where the thread standard was BSPP instead of NPT — caught it on the receiving inspection, but it was close.
The difference is that when a mistake happens with a specialist, they have the depth to fix it in a phone call. When it happens with a generalist, you're often on your own.
So here's my rule now: I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. The vendor who says 'this isn't our strength' isn't admitting weakness. They're telling you exactly where their competence ends — and that boundary tells you where their competence actually is.

That one sentence has saved me more money than any negotiated discount I've ever gotten. And it took a $2,400 mistake to finally figure that out.
